Global

London

Democracy; government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system.

Arguably, in the pale anemic "democratic" style today, the wishes of the people are all but irrelevant, while the wishes of governmental sponsors and special interest groups reigns supreme. The one remaining artefact is the ability to vote which as a token gesture remains intact. Although the act of  voting has become an empty gesture, it does occasionally change the personnel but not the juggernaut, rogue and corporate motivated governance which rolls forwards unimpeded by constituent wishes.

Compounding the erosion of democratic principle is another added layer of un-democratizing complexity, organisations such as the United Nations have somehow perched upon the shoulders of sovereign nation prerogatives, they profess to be the voice of the people from above and without input profess to provide actual countries with rules and regulations, regardless of that countries population and their "will."

In this scenario the citizens vote is entirely impotent, redundant and otherwise a complete waste of effort to register or execute, this is reminiscent of historical implementation of fascism or other undemocratic ruling systems. It is not at all what we signed on for and quite simply is intolerable.

"Pretending" democracy does not realize democracy... let us call it what it is... delusional.

If it were not so serious the current attempt by the UN itself to loosely fit into a "democratic" wrapper would be humorous. As it is... no matter how they squirm, they are a square peg and the hole of democracy is round.

In its zeal to appear to have legitimacy, the self-anointed, self-professed UN is striving mightily to morph into a democratic-like shape.

How can something become "more democratic?"

It is either democratic or not democratic and by self-admission it is not.

The UN suffers from the same ailment as other previously democratic governance systems which now by and large have become chronically undemocratic--there are no people franchised into the process for the supreme power to be vested into, therefore they, the people are unable to exercise their will, therefore what we have is NOT democracy.

The very BIG decisions are made in Corporate boardrooms where the peoples input is neither wanted, welcomed or considered, These arbitrary decisions are routinely condoned then enacted by sycophant,

puerile governance, most often to the detriment of the hapless constituents. Many of these decisions are reckless, ill-advised, wanton and often manifest travesty and hurt.

It is high time we stop pretending, democracy as a governing system is dead! It seems to me we have two.

Every time elections come around you are promised change, a new way of doing things, that thing's can only get better. Politicians fight for your vote with slogans and advertising campaigns, sometimes even policies (!!!), but how much is your vote really worth when behind closed doors corporations are able to influence decision making with money? How much power is being wielded by big business and does it, ultimately, mean the democratic dream is over?

What The Frack!

There I was, just about to watch a Youtube video, of an astrology reading by Kelley Rosano, when a pop up ad appeared for the effing Shale Gas World conference happening this week, 13th and 14th May, in Birmingham.

Now, it’s very unlikely that ANYONE into astrology is likely to be FOR FRACKING, surely, or wanting to go to the biggest propaganda event of the year, intent on selling the destruction of our ecosystems and health, in the name of profit for the few. But it reminded me that I needed to write a blog about it.

So – FRACKING – a way worse dirty word than the other F-word, which just means making love, in a more Anglo-Saxon kind of way. Just because America’s let fracking happen in certain states – although it’s now clearly apparent how destructive and harmful this is for people and planet – doesn’t mean that we should do it here, or anywhere else in the world, for that matter. Not wanting fracking to happen is not NIMBYism, I don't want it happening AT ALL, ANYWHERE, not just in my back yard, thank you very much.
To me, it is a complete NO BRAINER that it is complete MADNESS getting another fossil fuel industry going full pelt, adding to the pollution and destruction already rife on the earth, for the sake of a few more burps of gas. This industry is ENTIRELY ABOUT THE MONEY, for those invested in it, at the expense of public health, countryside, water safety and so on. I’m pretty sure anyone else into this wonderful Wave of Action agrees, seeing as we’re all about making a better world, one with clean water and air, I expect - which it won’t be if fracking gets going - but could be is renewable energy takes over. So I won’t keep going on about why it’s so bad – although you’re welcome to read this blog on Why We Don't Need Fracking from the Centre for Alternative Technology which explains it nicely - so much as show you some ways to protest against it.

Most important, right now, if you’re in the Birmingham area at all, get along to the event to join Occupy London protesting there. http://occupylondon.org.uk/events/shale-gas-world-exhibition-fracking-madness-birmingham/

Included in this shout out, was the link to the list of attendees, which has been taken down now and just says ‘contact us now’. Running scared? Let’s hope so. I wish I’d printed a copy of the long list of banks, councils and companies exhibiting at this event when the list was on the site a week or so ago. Fortunately, you can still see the sponsors logos, so they can be researched and bombarded with letters, emails and phone calls of objection. Note that the 'gold sponsor' is the lovely Halliburton, the main players in the Pennsylvanian shale industry, re-builders of bomb-wrecked Iraq after the war, once led by the delightful Ex US VP Dick Cheney, who exempted the fracking industry from various environmental and clean water laws in the US. See this article from Truthout http://www.truth-out.org/opinion/item/21828-time-to-end-the-cheney-halliburton-loophole DR EVIL!

So, what can we do the rest of the time? There are many frack free UK facebook pages, for the UK as a whole - try BIFF: Britain and Ireland Frack Free  , the Anti-fracking Network and FRACK OFF or search anti-fracking groups in your area, if it’s one under threat. So join those and get campaigning locally and nationally by protesting, flyering, raising awareness.

I love this group – The Warrior’s Call, Pagans United Against Fracking - for spells, magic and meetings to send fracking packing, plus a specially designed and activated shield to wear to protect yourself and the land against fracking, and send out with your intentions to put a stop to this abhorrent industry.

Why not set up a screening of Gasland, The Dash for Gas: Independence at a Price or other fracking documentary, in your local community centre, to make people aware of what it’s all about and the real dangers in presents. You could also get an informed speaker from an anti-fracking organisation, Greenpeace or Friends of the Earth to talk at your event.
Incredibly, many people still don’t even know about it but once they find out, they are shocked and don’t want it to happen, especially nearby - unless they have invested in it, because (surprise!) a lot of money could be made out of fracking. It could be the next coal or oil boom, according to investment analysts, such as this one http://moneyweek.com/how-to-invest-in-fracking/ which actually made me cry, to think that some people want the money, so badly, they don’t give a shit if it wrecks the world. Shale gas will eventually run out, of course, by which time the water undrinkable, or plundered to a ridiculous level, because, don’t forget, it can take MILLIONS OF GALLONS of fresh water to frack a single well FFS!
Oops, off I go again, ranting about the evils of fracking! Hey, if money’s your thing though, at the cost of humanity and our precious environment, remember the government is trying to change the law so the shale industry can frack under your home, without you knowing or having any say in the matter. So, that’s the value of your home decreased (and probably shuddering and shaking now and then) so why not write to the government asking them if they really think this is the right thing to do:

Ultimately, we need to really do all we can to come off fossil fuels altogether. Not an easy thing, but do-able if communities pull together to work out a plan of transition. Another article from the Centre for Alternative Technology shares how Balcombe, scene of last summer’s anti-fracking protests, is becoming a Zero Carbon village:

“The goal: build enough community-owned solar power to match the electricity needs of all 760 homes in the village within 2 years.”

Find out more how to go about this for your area, there is enough information online at http://www.repowerbalcombe.com/ and via the Transition Movement http://www.transitionnetwork.org/ which may already be burgeoning in your area, and if it isn’t, get it started! I'll report more from my own mission soon.

Words As Weapons

So this week there’s been a few stories that have caught my eye. I have to say though, the story of Clark French in his local paper the argus is the one that has taken up a lot of my attention.

Now if you don’t know this guy’s story he’s a 28 year old MS sufferer from Brighton who has spoken about being forced to break the law by using cannabis to relieve his symptoms and even prolong his life.
I’ve also been following the case of a character called Bopalot Barnes who also being prosecuted for cultivation of a controlled substance under the misuse of drugs act 1971. However Bopalot is a freeman on the land and as such is legally not obliged to comply with acts and statutes of parliament. Let’s see how this plays out.

Whilst this has all been going on I’ve also been watching a lot of Simon Spaniard videos and I think some of his banging on has sunk in. He’s always saying that words are our greatest weapons and he shows us how. He ties government officials up in knots by reading them the accepted definition of legal terminology. I have to say it’s hilarious to watch at times. Trust me, make the effort, you’ll thank me for it.

So I decided to look at the wording of the misuse of drugs act and it’s definitions.

Misuse; Use (something) in the wrong way or for the wrong purpose.
Drug; A medicine or other substance which has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body.

Well I think we can all agree (unless you’re a politician) that the therapeutic value of cannabis has been proven beyond doubt in multiple credible studies worldwide. It undoubtedly is a medicine for many.
What construes misuse in these cases though? Let’s look at the evidence. You have a young man who is taking nothing from the system and choosing to help himself with medication that works for him. We have Bopalot who just wanted to make a few quid on the side. Who doesn’t nowadays?

Now both of these could face real jail time because of their proclivities. However GW pharma have just released to market Sativex. It’s a high THC medicine for use with MS sufferers that they floated on the stock market making $100million in the process. They are then selling it at an exorbitant price to patients in dire need of it for the good of their health. These same fee paying patients could be making these medicines at home for themselves for free though. We all could.

Another thing I’ve noticed Spaniard say a lot is that all law is opinion. Now if that is indeed so, which parties in your opinion are truly misusing the drug?

How many of you have heard of Zohydro? It’s a new drug being released to market in America that is five times stronger than morphine. It’s legalised heroin. I first heard about in on Max Keiser.
America is suffering an epidemic of opiate related deaths from legalised drugs that are being peddled by the federal government using Afghan opium. We’re seeing it here too with these opiate based treatments on the rise.

The profits from these ‘treatments’ garner massive revenues and a guaranteed income stream.

If all opinion is law, who is misusing the substance within this context?

If a drug is considered a substance that causes physiological change when induced, could this be applied to the fossil fuel industry? Do oil, coal and methane cause physiological changes to the human anatomy? I don’t think there’s any argument that they do.

Are they being misused? Again this comes down to opinion.

The evidence shows that the fossil fuel industry is the greatest source of greenhouse gases on the planet. Are those resources being exploited? Undoubtedly! Profit is always considered motive.

Can we do without them? Yes we can!

We have the technology to create a whole new society based on sustainability. We could change everything within ten years if we moved away from fossil fuels. Anything that can be made from fossil fuels can be made from hemp. Fuel, plastics, materials everything!

If all opinion is law, are the fossil fuel industries misusing physiologically altering substances for their own gain?

Did you know that at one time, hemp was the rotation crop of choice for any farmer worth his salt? Its roots would run almost ten feet deep and choke out any other weeds. It would grow so tall it would block out the sunlight not allowing anything else to grow. This left the land fertile and healthy while also giving the farmer two or three decent cash crops per year.

I’m sure the likes of Monsanto would hate to have it be common knowledge that the best weed killer is actually hemp and not Roundup. Another substance with dangerous physiological effects that are on a par with their GMO’s! These same are substances are being blamed for colony collapse disorder which is killing off our bee population. I’ve been able to find papers that show that hemp is actually a natural part of the bee’s food chain and that it’s been shown to prevent colony collapse disorder.

Now call me Mr picky but if occurs to me that if you prohibit a natural part of any animal’s food chain you’re going to see a decline in their numbers.

So are the big agriculture businesses misusing their physiologically altering substances in the name of a bigger balance? Undoubtedly!

And of course the number one offenders, the banks! They rely on all of their poisons to keep them afloat on massive profits.

Could we consider charging them under the misuse of drugs act?

Words may be the greatest weapon we have in the war against the establishment. Hemp/cannabis/weed, whatever you want to call it, is the second.

If you truly want to see change, go out and buy a bag of organic seeds and spread it anywhere you can. Start the green revolution and show the oligarchy we don’t need them to make progress.

Self-sufficiency solutions

So, I was talking to a friend today, who has very similar interests to me. What was supposed to be, maybe, a half hour chat, turned into four hours on Skype batting ideas around for a better world.
There’s something that’s been kicking about in my head for a while now, and, after talking to him, he’s advised me to come up with a pitch, so to speak.
I should point out that, at heart, we’re both old hippies who want to save the world. We’re also both IT bods and a tad geeky when it comes to technology. So the conversation started off with me introducing my friend to the world of cryptocurrencies. He lives in Scotland and Scotcoin is about to announce its virtual IPO before distributing coins to applicants.
I began by introducing him to an episode Max Keiser (who hates everything to do with the banking system) singing the praises of Bitcoin. http://rt.com/shows/keiser-report/episode-588-max-keiser-532/.  Needless to say, he was grabbed straight away, and, seeing as he’s running a server at home, went and spent £50 on Blackcoin and Dogecoin from http://www.coin-hub.co.uk/.

After that, I introduced him to the technology that he needs, most of which he is already running. Again, something else to do with being a techy type, what I’m loving about the emergence of the cryptocurrencies is the technology that it's innovating behind it.

It was at that moment that I had a one of those 'holy shit/eureka'-type moments. Now, this might sound really simple, but sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. If there’s something that modern society could with less of, it’s complications.

If you know anything about cryptocurrencies, then you know the safest place to keep them is on your own rig than save at some vault! It didn’t work out too well for those at MT Gox. That’s the beauty of the system though, there’s no 'too big to fail'. No bail outs. Your money is sovereign to you, and you make more as you contribute and improve the technology you’re running.
So, if each of us can be sovereign monetarily, how else could we incorporate that technology into our everyday lives? This got me wondering about how we could incorporate that technology into something like smart homes. But what do you consider a truly smart home for the 21st century? I’ve had an idea mulling over in my head, drawn from hours of research, that I think could make the best option for affordable, sustainable housing.
For me, the first thing we need to do is introduce hemp farming on an industrial scale. Hemp is proving to be one of the boom industries of the 21st century, if the reports are to be believed.
Earlier today, Hemp, Inc. released it’s sales figures for the first quarter of 2014. After an outstanding end of 2013, many expected a good first quarter, but an increase of 1,182% over the the same period of time of last year was not in the forecast.
So, as a start off, we have a multimillion dollar industry that can grow into other things. This brings us back to the smart homes. Hempcrete is being touted as the building material of the future.
Doesn’t it make sense to grow a crop that we can use to build homes rather than go mining or quarrying for materials? Also, this material could be used in the same 3d printers that have just been used in china to build ten houses in 24 hours, making healthy homes for all.
The next problem was the windows. Well as it turns out, hemp has that covered too.
We already have the technology for plastics from hemp. If we can develop it to make something along the lines of PVC windows, then they’re also solved.

But if this is going to be a truly smart home then surely it should be off-grid, right? Well. that was my thinking, and I’m going with the flow here. Yes, hemp can cover this too. However it will take some bright little techy type out there to help me with that bit. The majority of it I think I have already.
Ok, how many of you have heard of the wonder material of the age: graphene? Well here’s an intro for you:
So hemp can provide graphene with massive storage for capacitors. How can that be exploited?
So, now we have a super-efficient energy conversion material coupled with a super-efficient storage system. Supplying it to household goods, I’ll leave to someone smarter than me, who may have already seen something that could be implemented with this technology.
Can we make these systems without panels?
http://www.clickgreen.org.uk/research/data/124309-worlds-thinnest-solar-cells-could-turn-windows-into-pv-panels-.html If the house is made of materials, conducive to using an outer covering such as this, then yes.

Now comes the part that you techy types are going to love. Incorporate all of the above technologies into 3d printing. These kind of homes could be made anywhere all from one plant.
This would also have a massive impact on the shell fish industry as, rather than going strip mining for limestone, we could use oyster shells to create lime.
Any pollution caused would be negated by the fact that there would be hemp growing all around.
CO2 Absorbed per tonne of hemp stem 1.37t
CO2 Absorbed per hectare (stem) (UK) 7.47 to 11.25t
CO2 Absorbed per hectare (root and leaf) UK) 1.40 to 2.06t
Any pollution that did make it to the sea would again be absorbed by the shell fish.
This method seems to me to be entirely sustainable.

So, now we have our materials sourced and applied, our 3d printed home that we each designed ourselves, being maintained by our mining rig computer looking after our own money. We have a completely energy-efficient system proposed and a way to be financially sovereign from any government or centralised organisation and, finally, we’re free of the system. Free from the corporatocracy and the fossil fuel age.

If this appeals to you, please run with it. Develop the tech, make it open source, let everyone have a bit of this and come together as one, in the interest of all.
